Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as his official representative during the consideration in parliament of Russia’s denunciation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The corresponding order of the head of the Russian state was published on Wednesday, May 10.

“To appoint Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Alekseevich Ryabkov as the official representative of the President of the Russian Federation when the chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation consider the issue of the denunciation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, signed in Paris on November 19, 1990,” the document says.

The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe was signed in Paris in 1990 by representatives of 16 NATO member states and six members of the Warsaw Pact, and in 1999, an updated version of the agreement was signed at the summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Istanbul .

The indefinite treaty implied the creation of a system to limit the number of conventional weapons – tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery pieces, combat aircraft and attack helicopters.
