Georgia will not impose sanctions against Russia

The Georgian government does not plan to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, so as not to aggravate relations between the two countries due to possible risks. This was announced by the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.

“Georgia is not going to impose bilateral sanctions against Russia… I think the international community and the population, as before, are convinced that this is the most correct and honest approach,” Papuashvili said.

The speaker added that the country’s authorities did not exert influence on Russia in order to lift the ban on flights of Russian companies to Georgia.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on flights to Georgia for Russian airlines, which was introduced on June 21, 2019. The head of state also canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May 15. In turn, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Mariam Kvrivishvili said that Tbilisi would allow direct flights to the country by Russian airlines that were not subject to sanctions.
