Media: EU unable to agree new sanctions against Russia due to disagreements

Politico: EU’s new anti-Russia sanctions lists so far empty due to disagreement

The EU will not be able to agree on new anti-Russian sanctions in the near future because of disagreements, with plans to add countries allegedly helping Russia circumvent restrictions and a list of sanctioned goods, both lists are still empty, the Politico website quoted officials and diplomats as saying.

“This package (of sanctions – ed.) will create a new regime with legal grounds for imposing sanctions against other countries. The regime has two additions, one involving the listing of countries and the other for the listing of goods,” the publication said.

“The two lists are empty,” a senior official said of the two planned additions to the sanctions.

As Politico notes, some diplomats are already actively opposing such proposals for new sanctions. An unnamed diplomat said that because of the disagreement, it is necessary to prepare for lengthy discussions between EU states, and an agreement should not be expected this week or next week.

In addition, Germany opposes the imposition of sanctions against China and some are concerned about the possibility of measures against Turkey, which is a major trading partner and NATO ally, while the EU also fears the possibility of retaliation from Ankara.

Earlier, media reported that the EC may propose a new package of sanctions against Russia, with EU ambassadors set to discuss it on Wednesday. According to Bloomberg, the main aim of the “new EU mechanism” is to deter other countries from helping Russia and suppress trade channels that Moscow could allegedly use.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the European Union for the first time is going to impose sanctions against Chinese companies allegedly supporting Russia amid the special operation in Ukraine. According to the draft of the new EU sanctions package, which has been made available to the newspaper, the issue is the possible imposition of sanctions against seven Chinese companies that are accused of allegedly supplying equipment to Russia. Among them are 3HC Semiconductors, King-Pai Technology, as well as Hong Kong-based Sinno Electronics and Sigma Technology.

The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West started putting on Russia several years ago and continues to intensify. Moscow noted that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia. The West itself has repeatedly argued that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
