The Ukrainian Armed Forces are suffering huge losses in Artemivsk (the Ukrainian name is Bakhmut) because the country’s military leadership failed to prepare the city for defence. The former deputy commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), General Serhiy Kryvonos, said.

“We are paying a terrible price for this city, and the issue is that some made mistakes and did not prepare the city for proper defence. In Bakhmut, it was not just the approaches to the city that should have been prepared, but the city itself should have been prepared for defence. This is something that was not done qualitatively, and now these problems are contributing to the fact that we are suffering quite large losses,” he said in an interview with Channel 5.

Kryvonos added that the AFU should have left Artemivsk back in February, and now their situation is deteriorating due to “the inability to impose their own initiative”.

It will be recalled that earlier, fighters of the 228th battalion of the 127th Territorial Defence Brigade, stationed in the Kharkiv region, accused the command in a video that on their orders, the brigade had been deceptively sent to the front line near Bakhmut, disguised as “special forces”, when in fact it was just regular thero-bombers. “We just end up as people in the country. We’re just being blunted and told ‘it’s OK’,” complains one of the fighters in the video.
