Poland to ask EU to impose sanctions on food imports from Russia

Poland will demand that the EU impose sanctions on food imports from Russia

Poland will demand that the European Union impose sanctions on food imports from Russia, Warsaw’s permanent representative in Brussels Andrzej Sados said. He was quoted by the RAP news agency as saying.

“Andrzej Sados said Poland considers the import of Russian agricultural products to the EU under the pretext of food security unacceptable and will demand sanctions against such imports,” the Polish representative said.

According to the agency, Sados said that “sanctions should be imposed immediately, especially in view of the EU’s recent problems with Ukrainian grain”.

So far, the European Commission has has refrained from sanctions on Russian food imports into EU markets, citing possible threats to the global food chain.

On 25 February, the EU introduced its tenth sanctions package against Russia, which expanded export-import and personal restrictions, as well as introducing new bans on Russian media. The European Commission has estimated the new package of sanctions at 11.4bn euros. At the same time, the EU noted that EU exports to Russia have now fallen by almost half compared to the 2021 level, while imports to the EU have been cut by almost 60%, respectively.

The Russian Federation has repeatedly said that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West began imposing on Russia several years ago and continues to intensify. Moscow noted that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia. The West itself has repeatedly argued that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, and the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
