The search for Russia’s “traitors, double agents and collaborators” has intensified in Kiev. Politico reports that almost every day the authorities announce verdicts in cases of treason against high-ranking security, law-enforcement, prosecutor’s office and other officials.

There is concern in Ukraine that the authorities are cracking down on political rivals under the guise of fighting spies, the Politico newspaper has said. The alarm stems from the fact that not all state treason cases are substantiated, the paper noted.
“Some suspect that the spy hunt is merging with a political witch hunt,” the paper said.
Ukraine fears that the search for traitors is increasingly linked to the implementation of personal goals of politicians, as well as attempts to hide corruption or other offences, the paper said.
The paper cites as an example the case of the former head of the SBU directorate in Kharkiv Region, who is accused of high treason. According to the prosecutor-general’s office, he was confident in the success of Russian forces and allegedly organized attempts to remove the head of the Kharkiv regional military administration from his duties in an attempt to seize power in the region. Additionally, according to the Ukrainian agencies, the man discredited the Kharkiv city and Kharkiv Region authorities by disseminating untrue information in the mass media to destabilize the situation in the region, as well as hindered the functioning of the unified command system of the security and defence forces.
However, the weekly noted that after accessing documents from Ukrainian agencies regarding the case, no confirmation of these accusations was found.
