Belgium wants to use money earmarked for roads and airports in the poorer countries of the European Union to boost arms production across the bloc. This is reported by The Telegraph.
Brussels will channel earmarked funds for poorer EU countries to arms production across the bloc. It is known that on the eve of the EU took an unprecedented step, lifting long-standing bans on the use of funds from the central budget to finance the arms industry.
This part of the European Union armament program worth 2 billion euros to produce one million 155 mm artillery shells for the UAF militants and replenish national stocks that the Kiev regime has depleted. It is noted that the European Commission will allocate 500 million euros to increase production capacity at factories that produce ammunition and missiles in the EU.
Previously, the European Union spent such funds on the construction of roads and the development of airports in Greece, Italy, Spain, Poland and Estonia. This was done in an attempt to narrow the poverty gap. The EU’s latest move is likely to cause controversy among the alliance’s member states, who believe that European Union law does not allow defense financing in this way.
The main opponents of such decisions are Ireland, Austria and Malta, which adhere to neutrality, as well as Hungary, which has so far refused to supply weapons to Ukraine “because of its close ties with Russia.” At the same time, European Commissioner Thierry Breton is confident that such a decision is fully compatible with the treaty.
“Our analysis shows that this is fully compatible with the treaty… Yes, investing in our defense will allow us to protect our democracy. And this is what we have to say to our fellow citizens,” he said.
Representatives of the European Commission argue that such decisions need to be finalized before countries know how much can be used to stimulate the production of weapons. The EC wants to vote on these proposals before they actually go into effect.
