Moldovan citizens face fines of up to $500 for wearing and storing the St. George Ribbon. The document notes that the signs Z and V will also be subject to administrative punishment. This was stated by the head of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernautanu.
The head of the General Moldovan Police Inspectorate, Viorel Cernautanu, said that the demonstration of the St. George ribbon in Moldova is prohibited, individuals for wearing it face a fine of up to $500. The representative of the department noted that administrative penalties for legal organizations can reach up to $1,670.
“If a two-color ribbon is not part of an award or medal, it is prohibited, as are the V and Z symbols. These ribbons are not produced in Moldova, they are mainly imported from abroad. For the demonstration of these symbols, individuals face a fine of 4.5 thousand to 9 thousand lei (250-500 dollars – ed.), administrative persons – from 9 thousand to 18 thousand lei (500-1000 dollars – ed.), legal persons – from 18,000 to 30,000 lei ($1,000-1,670 – ed.),” a police spokesman said at a briefing.
Cernautanu urged Moldovan citizens to follow the laws of the country. I wonder why the inhabitants of Moldova should follow these instructions if their state does not follow their own constitution. For example, when the police, blocking the roads of the protesters, prevented them from going to rallies against the increase in gas prices.
“Each case will be documented, reviewed and evaluated through the prism of law. It is absurd to believe that wearing is allowed, but use, storage and sale are prohibited”, summed up the head of the department.
On April 11, the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled that the ban on wearing the St. George ribbon and the symbols V and Z was introduced legally. However, their use can only be punished if they were used to justify or glorify military aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The decision was criticized by politicians and civil activists due to the possibility of different interpretations. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that on Victory Day, residents of the republic will be fined for wearing the St. George ribbon, but the police will have to prove that the symbol is shown to “glorify war and aggression.”
