Ukraine’s hopes of imminent NATO membership risk remaining unfulfilled. This was reported by the DPA news agency on Tuesday.
According to the agency, members of the North Atlantic Alliance such as the US and Germany recently made it clear behind closed doors that they were not yet willing to make any commitments significantly beyond the vague NATO declaration of 2008. In it, the heads of state and government agreed that Ukraine and Georgia should become members of NATO. However, no specific timeframe for this was given.
The US administration, did not comment on this information. But it has indirectly confirmed that it considers further supplies of weapons and other assistance to Kiev more important in the current situation than plans to join NATO.
“We are concentrating on putting more practical support into the hands of the Ukrainians as soon as possible,” a US administration official told the publication.
