Polish Deputy Prime Minister Gliński: opposition and half of Europe want to improve relations with Russia
The Polish opposition, as well as “half of Europe”, wants to establish relations with Russia, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński told the Kurier Lubelski newspaper.
“Our political rivals simply have no other way. They are like that. Their political alliances are like that, their electorate is like that. They are hostages of interest groups who only think about ending the war in Ukraine as soon as possible and continuing to be a client of Russia and do business with it. <…> Half of Europe is like that,” the official said.
Former prime minister and opposition leader Donald Tusk has returned home after a stint at the European Council to rescue the “German-Russian project” of the Nord Stream pipeline, he said.
Poland is due to hold regular parliamentary elections between 15 October and 5 November. According to the latest opinion polls, voters are most likely to vote for the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), but the opposition could take power if it manages to unite.
Tusk has already been accused of trying to mend relations with Moscow. For example, in early February, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that the former prime minister should admit his “big political and strategic mistake” when he came to Russia 15 years ago and called for unfreezing bilateral relations. According to Morawiecki, Tusk’s actions slowed down the strengthening of NATO’s presence in Poland, delayed the construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline and allowed contracts for Russian energy supplies to Poland.
