Media find out why Poland screwed Ukraine

Bloomberg: Poland imposes ban on grain imports from Ukraine so as not to alienate voters

Poland is imposing a ban on grain imports from Ukraine because the ruling Law and Justice party does not want to alienate voters before the autumn parliamentary elections, Bloomberg reported.

“Eastern European governments have jeopardised a crucial economic lifeline for Ukraine,” the story said.

The Polish authorities wanted to make sure Warsaw’s support for Kiev did not alienate voters and that is why they imposed a ban on grain imports, the article pointed out, citing a local official.

For his part, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, believes Poland’s “tough decision” will ultimately help Ukraine.

“It is not in the interests of our friends for Poland to plunge into crisis and for power to pass into the hands of those who will completely change their policy of support for Kiev,” he argues.

Last week the European Commission agreed with Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania to lift their ban on agricultural imports from Ukraine. Instead, exceptional measures are being introduced for four products: wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seeds, and affected farmers will receive a hundred million euros in aid.
