A senior US administration official told reporters.

He called the scheduled meeting at the White House “the first bilateral contact of this level and intensity in decades”, RIA Novosti reported.

He said the Philippine president wants to work closely with the US and the PRC, but finds himself in a situation where China’s actions have caused “deep concern”.

“In this context, we have taken meaningful steps in terms of bilateral engagement,” the US administration official said.

Earlier, US Redacted News host Clayton Morris had noted Biden’s shift in attention from Ukraine to a potential conflict with China.

On 12 April, it was reported that the US and the Philippines had agreed to strengthen defence cooperation.
