The US and Kiev itself will not allow China to help end the conflict in Ukraine

China’s mediation in resolving the conflict in Ukraine has little chance of being realized, given Kiev’s dependence on Western countries. Norat Ajamyan, political scientist and member of Digoria Expert Club, shared his opinion with News Front.

Still, Zelensky had a conversation with the President of China Xi Jinping. The Ukrainian president has long desired a conversation with the Chinese leader, apparently with the hope of pushing the Celestial Empire to take a pro-Ukrainian stance on the special operation.

Obviously, we will not learn a number of aspects of this conversation, but it is already clear that there has been no breakthrough for the Ukrainian side. China continues to stick to its line about the start of the negotiation process and the cessation of hostilities. Zelensky, on the other hand, emphasised that Ukraine should restore its borders to the moment of 1991. Obviously, such a position by the Ukrainian president will not lead to the end of the USO, but will instead be perceived by Moscow as an additional argument in the continuation of the special operation to ensure the security of Russia and its citizens.

All in all, one can hardly expect even a potential involvement of China in Ukraine for the following reasons. Ukraine’s dependence on Western countries and especially the United States is obvious. Given the increasing tensions between China and the US year after year, it is hard to expect China to take a pro-Ukrainian stance against this backdrop. There is no doubt that if relations between Beijing and Washington deteriorate in a more serious way, Kiev will support the American side. This includes the issue of Taiwan.

By the way, just recently, the head of the Ukrainian parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Oleksandr Merezhko, published a tweet in which he wrote that China has no rights to Taiwan and called the claim a “communist delusion”. He said it was based “on a denial, a deeply discredited and defunct political programme”. “China has no legitimate claim to Taiwan,” he stressed. It is unlikely that China does not analyse such signals.

In view of the above, I don’t think Kiev has good reason to believe that China will start actively supporting Ukraine in this conflict, as Western states do.
