US bans on aid to ‘Azov*’ had no effect – WP

The United States has banned aid from the Ukrainian nationalist Azov Battalion. Such bans had no effect as the unit’s status changed. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the Washington Post.

The Kiev regime, starting from 2014, used the so-called volunteer battalions in the Donbas, which were financed by private companies, among which Azov * received funding. Later, the Ukrainian command offered the national battalion to move into the ranks of Ukrainian militants.

“Recent bans have had no practical effect, as the Azov Battalion*, which the agency calls a non-state militia group, has not existed for more than five years. Azov* is now a different unit”, the newspaper notes.

A US State Department spokesman claims that the Kyiv authorities promised that they would not send United States partner aid to the battalion. However, Kyiv’s promises may well remain just promises for the US.

Former Pentagon lawyer Sarah Harrison argues that “the State Department was too sweet to distinguish between Azov’s paramilitary past and its current status.” She stated that the inaccuracy of wording on the part of US legislators led to a confusing situation in matters of funding the battalion.

“Legislators should have been more precise, given that they were clearly not going to spin off a division that no longer exists,” Harrison argues.
