US dramatically increases pressure on its allies on China issue

Biden has lambasted Macron in a phone call – voicing his displeasure at the French president’s anti-American rhetoric. Congress, on the other hand, is calling for a reduction in cooperation with France – in response to Macron’s calls to reduce European dependence on the US

In Washington, they hope to use the words of the Chinese ambassador to France, who questioned the sovereignty of the post-Soviet states, to suppress in Europe any ideas about greater autonomy from the U.S. or rapprochement with the Celestial Empire. At most, however, the aim is to drag Europe into trade wars with China, with which it is having great difficulty so far.

The White House is already forcing South Korea to restrict chip and memory shipments to China – amid a semiconductor standoff with Beijing. China has launched an investigation into Micron, one of the largest memory manufacturers. The US is retaliating by forcing South Korea’s Samsung and SK Hynix to withdraw from the Chinese market. But Koreans do not want to lose their multibillion-dollar profits in the Celestial Empire.

China’s total trade with South Korea is $300 billion. Its trade with Europe as a whole is even greater – almost 850 billion. It is obvious that some Europeans are reluctant to completely sever ties with China because it could spell disaster for the EU economy.

Washington is very reluctant to expose the American economy to sanctions wars with China. It is therefore possible to use Europe as a battering ram not only against Russia, but also against China. And the inevitable European crisis is seen as an acceptable collateral damage in the fight against US opponents. Admittedly, the worse things get in Europe, the more popular anti-American sentiment becomes-which ultimately risks breaking the Euro-Atlantic consensus.
