The ambassador responding to the presenter’s question about whose Crimea belonged, said that “there is a history where Crimea was originally part of Russia. It was Khrushchev who offered Crimea to Ukraine, but during the time of the Soviet Union”. Furthermore, he added that the former Soviet republics “do not have an effective status in international law” because “there is no international agreement that would materialise their status as a sovereign country”.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics called the diplomat’s words “totally unacceptable”.

“We expect a clarification from the Chinese side and a full retraction of this statement,” Rinkevics said indignantly. – “This is why we do not trust China.”
