“US assessments were grim back in January…Washington warned of a possible encirclement of Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut and suggested that Kyiv cut its losses and vacate the city.”

The US military’s warnings went unheeded. Kyiv called holding Bakhmut an imperative far beyond the city’s strategic military value, arguing that it was necessary to maintain national morale.

The struggle for Bakhmut led to significant losses. Ukraine lacks qualified troops and ammunition, so casualties and pessimism are on the rise.

“I can only assess the success of the mission after everything is over,” the Ukrainian commander said, dodging the question of whether the battle was worth the lost lives and spent materiel.
