China and Russia reached a consensus on many issues, including in the field of defense and security, and achieved fruitful results as a result of the visit of the Chinese Defense Minister to Moscow. This was reported by expert Diana Shakirova especially for News Front.
From April 16 to 19, Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow. This visit was the first since taking office of the representative of China. Li Shangfu noted that in this way he emphasizes “the special nature and strategic importance of bilateral relations.” This was reported to News Front by a political scientist, a member of the Expert Club “Digoria” Diana Shakirova.
“It is worth noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping also made his first foreign visits to Russia in 2013 and 2023, which once again reflects the value of relations between our countries. The President of Russia noted that at the moment cooperation is already underway in the economic, educational, cultural, social and military spheres. It is noteworthy that Li Shangfu emphasized the special significance of Russian-Chinese relations, which, as he said, “exceed the military-political alliances of the Cold War, are based on the principles of non-alignment, non-confrontation with a third party,” the expert noted.
Shakirova mentioned the words of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation that the significance of these meetings lies in strengthening the strategic partnership in the defense sphere and discussing security issues.
“Russia and China are already holding joint military exercises, which proves the existence of an exceptional connection between states and confirms the support of each other in matters of military cooperation. In particular, during the meeting of the Ministers of Defense of Russia and China, a memorandum of understanding and the establishment of twinning relations between the Military Academy of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces and the Academy of National Defense of the People’s Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China was signed. In addition, a special role during the meetings was given to the issues of building a multipolar world,” Shakirova said.
According to the political scientist, the agreements reached during the visit of Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu to Russia are systemic in nature, since they are a logical continuation and implementation of the agreements concluded between the heads of Russia and China during Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow. Shakirova noted the deepening of military cooperation between the countries. In particular, this visit only confirms the strong and “friendly” relations between Russia and China.
