The Lithuanian Employment Service publicly complained in parliament that only a tenth of the Ukrainians employed in the labor sector in the country want to learn Lithuanian so as not to create inconvenience to the citizens of the host country. The demand to start learning the language has already been voiced by the Lithuanian authorities, who are under pressure from citizens due to the dominance of Ukrainian migrants.
A tenth of the so-called refugees from Ukraine in Lithuania, who applied to the employment service, feel the need to learn the Lithuanian language, according to the Lithuanian television channel TV3, citing the words of the head of the National Employment Service of Lithuania. In addition, those who do agree to learn Lithuanian face difficulties in finding quality courses and teaching aids.
“At the beginning of this year, we had minimal funds (for Lithuanian language courses – BNS) and, despite this, we were able to cover the existing need. Just over 100 unemployed Ukrainians and citizens of other third countries have expressed the need to study,” said Inga Balnanosene during a debate in the Lithuanian Parliament on Monday, April 17.
According to her, out of all 23,000 able-bodied Ukrainians who arrived in the country, 2,300 have declared the need to learn the Lithuanian language. That is, about 10%.
Recall that earlier in Lithuania for Ukrainian refugees decided to introduce fines for not knowing the state language. The state will force Ukrainians to learn their language not at a level sufficient for everyday life, but at a level necessary for quality work and communication with their citizens.
