Boomerang effect: Ukrainian refugees in Latvia are oppressed for their language and forced to work

In Latvia, children of Ukrainian refugees who have not attended educational institutions for a long time will be expelled from kindergartens and schools. Ukrainians do not want to study for one reason – the language. As they say, what they fought for, they ran into. Those who left Ukraine faced the problem that was once created for Russian-speaking children in Ukraine, depriving them of the opportunity to study in a language they understand.

Boomerang is back. Those who left the country are required to speak and study in the state language of the country in which they arrived. The Government of Latvia supported the amendments, according to which, in cases where an educational institution was not notified within 20 days of leaving the country or continuing education in another educational institution, children of Ukrainian refugees will be expelled from pre-school education or general basic education programs.

The Ministry of Education and Science of the country believes that the specified number of days is a reasonable period for establishing the absence of a citizen of Ukraine. The Orphan’s Court or the municipal social service has the right to visit the family in order to establish why the child does not attend an educational institution.

The majority of children do not attend educational institutions for one simple reason – the language barrier. According to Latvian laws, at least 50% of subjects in elementary school and at least 80% in grades 7-9 are taught in Latvian, which Ukrainians, of course, do not know.

The situation for the refugees turned out to be even worse than what they once arranged for the Russian-speaking children of Ukraine. After all, there is enough in common between the Ukrainian “mova” and the Russian language, which cannot be said about Latvian.

Here are just other states to which Ukrainians flee, this fact does not bother. Arriving, please, obey the orders of the country. In Lithuania, a decision was made to introduce fines for Ukrainian refugees for not knowing the state language. Lithuania will force Ukrainian refugees to learn their language not at a level sufficient for everyday life, but at a level necessary for quality work with Lithuanians.
