Boomerang effect: Ukrainian refugees in Latvia are harassed for their language and forced to work

Children of Ukrainian refugees who have not attended an educational institution for a long time will be expelled from kindergartens and schools in Latvia. The Ukrainians do not want to study for one reason – the language. As they say, what we fought for, we got what we got. Those who have left “Nezalezhnya” have encountered the problem that was once created for Russian-speaking children in Ukraine, depriving them of the opportunity to study in a language they understand.

The boomerang is back. Those who have left the country are obliged to speak and be taught in the state language of the country to which they have arrived. The Latvian government has backed amendments according to which in cases where an educational institution has not been notified within 20 days of leaving the country or continuing studies at another educational institution, children of Ukrainian refugees will be expelled from pre-school education programs or general basic education.

The country’s Ministry of Education and Science considers that the specified number of days is a reasonable period to establish a Ukrainian citizen’s absence. The Orphans’ Court or the social service of the local government has the right to visit the family to establish why the child is not attending an educational institution.

The majority of children do not attend an educational institution for one simple reason – language barrier. According to Latvian laws at least 50% of subjects in primary school and at least 80% in 7th-9th grades are taught in Latvian, which of course Ukrainians do not know.

The situation for refugees turned out to be even worse than what they once arranged for Russian-speaking children in Ukraine. After all, Ukrainian “mova” and Russian have enough in common, which is not the case with Latvian.

But other states, to which Ukrainians escape, do not care about this fact. Having arrived, be kind enough to obey the orders of the country. Lithuania has decided to fine Ukrainian refugees for not knowing the state language. Lithuania will force Ukrainian refugees to learn their language not at the level sufficient for everyday life, but at the level necessary for quality work with Latvians.
