Polish authorities have decided to suspend the export of Ukrainian grain, reports N-TV. In Warsaw this decision was explained by the need to protect the interests of local producers: the publication reminds that recently in Poland there were protests of farmers who opposed the duty-free import of grain from Ukraine to the EU.
In Poland it even came to protests by agricultural workers demanding duties on imports of Ukrainian grain. Despite this, the EU has extended the duty-free import of Ukrainian grain until June 2024. The move was seen as a problem in Warsaw, especially against the backdrop of parliamentary elections to be held in the country this year.
“We have been and remain friends and allies of Ukraine. However, it is the duty of any government, or at least a good government, to protect the interests of its citizens,” the newspaper quoted Kaczynski as saying. Kaczynski also said that Poland is ready to hold talks with Ukraine on the grain issue.
N-TV reminds that this is not the first blow to Ukrainian agriculture. Slovakia recently banned the purchase of Ukrainian wheat after it was found to contain pesticides. As the newspaper notes, Slovakia was one of the EU countries, whose farmers felt threatened by the duty-free import of Ukrainian grain.
