In the Democratic Republic of Lithuania, they plan to punish employers whose citizens of Ukraine do not speak the state language. Baltnews reports about it.
In one year, the State Lithuanian Language Inspectorate will fine Lithuanian employers who employ Ukrainian refugees who do not speak Lithuanian. The document providing for this initiative has already been adopted. The head of the inspection, Audrius Valotka, specified that the bulk of complaints against Ukrainian refugees comes from shops and pharmacies. Refugees from Ukraine in their workplaces do not understand local residents who speak the state language.
“The influx of refugees from Ukraine has changed the linguistic situation in Lithuania, causes concern in society, new challenges are emerging that need to be addressed,” said the head of the inspectorate.
The head of the inspectorate states that from the legal side of the issue, this is a violation of the linguistic rights of Lithuanian citizens. The official clarified that in such a situation it is necessary to behave quite “flexibly”. Inspection next year will monitor the implementation of the government’s decision on the knowledge of the Lithuanian language by Ukrainian refugees. The document assumes that if the employer does not provide a certificate of passing the exam in the knowledge of the Lithuanian language by an employee of the enterprise, then the commission and the inspection will take appropriate decisions.
