According to the newspaper, the Black Sea has already become an explosive point capable of provoking a conflict between Russia and NATO. The story of an American drone sunk by a Russian air force fighter indicates this. Because of such incidents, Washington needs a coherent strategy for the region.
“Putin, for his part, has focused all his attention on controlling Crimea, seeing it as a crucial part of his confrontation with NATO. He considers the Black Sea extremely important for the demonstration of Russian military power in the Mediterranean and beyond,” the publication said.
Ukrainian leaders have been sending confusing and rather contradictory signals in recent days about their readiness to discuss the status of Crimea in future peace talks with Russia. However, the liberation of the peninsula may become the central objective of the upcoming Ukrainian offensive, the paper said.
