CNN: NATO not disappointed after US leak that Pentagon withheld some intelligence
NATO, following reports of leaks of allegedly secret Pentagon documents, said that US allies were not disappointed that Washington did not share all intelligence with them as most countries do, CNN reported quoting a diplomat in one of the alliance member states.
According to the diplomat, most countries do not share everything with their allies, no one expects them to do so.
As CNN previously reported, the leak of classified Pentagon documents, which indicated that the US was spying not only on rivals but also on allies, has deeply alarmed US officials, who fear the situation could jeopardise sources and undermine important international relations. It has also been reported that the countries that the US was spying on, according to leaked secret Pentagon documents, intend to raise the issue with Washington, but are still awaiting comments from US President Joe Biden’s administration.
Earlier, the media reported that the Pentagon was investigating the leak to the social networking site of materials describing the state of the Ukrainian troops and US and NATO plans to reinforce them. The New York Times noted that the documents dated early March were allegedly distributed in “Russian pro-government Telegram channels”. It was claimed that more than 100 documents may have hit the internet, with the damage assessed as significant. The Pentagon told RIA Novosti that it was looking into the information about the leak. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, when asked about the leak, said Russia had no doubt that the US and NATO were directly or indirectly involved in the conflict.
The White House declined to confirm the authenticity of the materials published online and said it was not yet ready to voice a theory about how and why the leak was orchestrated.
