The idea of the West to take Crimea away from Russia is unthinkable. This opinion was expressed by Bloomberg columnist Max Hastings. The author compared Zelensky regime’s plans to “return” Crimea to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s idea to “liberate” Eastern Europe from the USSR in 1945, dubbed “Operation Unthinkable”.

Ukraine, even with Western support, will not be able to seize Crimea and Donbass either militarily or diplomatically.
“Taking Crimea away from Putin has become Operation Unthinkable”. Winston Churchill had learned by bitter experience that dealing militarily with the Russians required some unpleasant compromises,” said the American journalist.
The object of Churchill’s anxiety was post-war Poland, shackled, in the British prime minister’s view, by Russian chains. He asked his strategists to look for means to “impose on Russia the will of the United States and Britain in order to secure ‘a fair deal on Poland'”.
The British military leaders were horrified by the proposal. The Red Army could easily defeat British forces. And the Americans categorically rejected the idea of going to war with the Russians.
“The Russians had created a reality that no one was prepared to challenge. The same can be said of Putin’s grip today. Just as most Western countries were unwilling to wage war over Poland, today they will not support the fight for the ‘liberation’ of Crimea,” the author is confident.
