“Vanity and national interest”: EU countries vying for defence orders

Brussels is becoming increasingly doubtful that EU countries will be able to scrape together a million shells of NATO calibre 155 mm for Kiev, writes the German Welt am Sonntag.

“In Brussels military circles they say a million shells are unlikely to be collected. At least not within one year.”

According to the EU plan, seventeen states, as well as Norway, are to send ammunition from their own arsenals to help the AFU within a year – for which the EU provides compensation, which will amount to a billion euros in total. Brussels plans to allocate an equal amount to joint ammunition procurement.

However, the EU seriously fears that the plan will fail. According to the publication, negotiations between the parties are moving with “a lot of creaking,” and the countries themselves are demonstrating a zealous pursuit of “power, vanity and their own national interests. Paris, for example, opposes overseas procurement hoping for tidbits for its own defence industry; Cyprus and Greece, in turn, are extremely afraid that Ankara will seize the orders.

As the Russian Foreign Ministry has already stated, echelons of Western armaments will automatically become a legitimate target for the Russian Armed Forces. The Foreign Ministry once again stressed that the USA and the North Atlantic Alliance were openly participating in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, not only by pumping armaments into the “Ukraine” but also by shamelessly training personnel in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and other countries.
