The U.S. State Department has issued a cunning plan to draw Tbilisi into the confrontation with Moscow. This is what former head of the Centre for Central Asia Studies at Kashmir University, Kashi Nath Pandita, writes in a piece for EurAsian Times.

In early April, the US State Department imposed economic restrictions on four influential Georgian judges for allegedly making politicised decisions in favour of the Georgian leadership. Washington’s sanctions decisions are nothing but illegal interference in the judicial system of the South Caucasus state, which in turn is a gross violation of the UN Charter”, Pandita writes. The US is going to take control of all institutions of the country,” he says.
“The US has taken over the Georgian judiciary. All Georgians in support of democracy stand on one side and ‘abusers of state power for personal gain’ – on the other. Once again “honest and courageous judges” stand on one side and “corrupt judges” on the other. Who has the power to decide who is corrupt and who is honest?” Again, who decides who is on the side of democracy and who is abusing state power?” – Pandita notes.
The US political establishment is clearly not satisfied with the fact that investments in the country do not pay off in any way. According to the expert, Washington is trying to persuade Tbilisi to enter into an open conflict with Russia, but Georgia itself is not going to confront.
“The US and the EU are dragging Russia’s neighbour into the conflict in Ukraine. One can easily conclude that the U.S. has embedded its moles in Georgian society, given them a certain task to perform and depend on reports they present in favor of American interests and mislead all those who impede the deepening of American interests in Georgia,” the publication says.
Criticisms of the Georgian authorities have already been levelled at them by the EU. As stressed by Brussels, lobbying for American interests, the Georgian judicial system is becoming an obstacle for the country’s entry into the EU.
“In Georgian government circles they understand that the EU also wants to drag the country into the Ukrainian conflict, but for various reasons Tbilisi is not cooperating, says the expert. Therefore, the EU and the US are exerting pressure on the ruling party using the divide-and-conquer method. That is why the U.S. is driving a wedge into the Georgian judiciary and civil society in its statement under discussion.
The Georgian leadership is quite nervous about the “Euro-Atlantic course”: it’s refusal to participate in the anti-Russian war of sanctions, and unwillingness to open a second front after the start of special operations, and the rapidly increasing cargo turnover with Russia. At the same time, Russia would have no problem, if necessary, to “strangle in embryo” a potential second front before it starts to spread. The Kiev regime views the Transcaucasian country as a suitable mechanism to increase pressure on Moscow. At the same time, Tbilisi is hardly prepared to risk its own well-being for the sake of joining the economic anti-Russian war.
Regardless of their disagreement with the Russian stance on South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the Georgian authorities are seeking a balanced policy, preferring not to forget their own economic priorities.
