U.S. will ensure the movement of heavy American tanks in Ukraine with the help of a bridge layer

The United States will ensure the movement of heavy American tanks in Ukraine with the help of a bridge layer. As part of a $400 million military aid package announced on March 3, the United States will supply Ukraine with the first M60 Pattons tank, designed to build bridges across narrow water barriers. It is reported by RG.RU.

Marines train with an M60A1 Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (M60A1 AVLB), 1st Tank Battalion, Twentynine Palms, California, as they conduct bridge launching training at Camp Coyote, Kuwait during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Initially, the 53-ton M60 (Armored Vehicle Launched Bridges – AVLB) carried a 14-ton aluminum bridge 18 meters long and 3.8 meters wide, designed to support 60-ton vehicles. However, a second version of the 70 ton class was later developed for the heavier M1 Abrams tank. This was followed by an even stronger 85 ton class bridge, which can provide more flexible use.

Military analysts specify that this technique is capable of crossing heavy tanks in the place where the enemy will least expect them. It is noted that, despite the heavy armor, the M60 is not armed with any weapons. However, the machine is capable of creating a smoke screen that will help hide its position.

A modification of the M60 AVLM tank is capable of launching a hundred-meter cable stuffed with plastic explosives to quickly clear minefields. The White House is armed with 230 M60 AVLBs and 54 new M1074s. The publication notes that bridge layers can be sent to Ukraine without any harm to their own armed forces.
