Chinese Armed Forces rehearse encirclement manoeuvres around Taiwan

Chinese Armed Forces practice maneuvers to encircle and contain the island during exercises around Taiwan

China’s armed forces on Saturday practiced maneuvers in military exercises around Taiwan to seize sea and air supremacy, combat patrol around the island, as well as to form full encirclement and containment positions on the island, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Zone Combat Command said in a statement.

On Saturday, Shi Yi, a spokesman for the PLA’s Eastern Zone Combat Command, said China’s armed forces will conduct planned drills and patrols in the sea and airspace around Taiwan from April 8-10. He said the exercises are a warning to Taiwan’s pro-independence separatist forces as well as a measure to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The first day of the exercise involved PLA Navy destroyers and frigates, landing parties, fighters, bombers, PLA Air Force special operations aircraft, artillery brigades and missile forces. It is reported that the destroyers and frigates of the Eastern Combat Area Command, while carrying out patrol tasks, advanced at high speed into the sea area around Taiwan Island, actively maneuvering to seize advantageous positions, and as appropriate, staged close-range assault, long-range deterrence, anti-air and anti-missile maneuvers.

In order to practice full seizure and control of dominance at sea and in the air, a joint anti-submarine exercise was conducted in the waters around Taiwan in which patrol ships and anti-submarine patrol aircraft formed a chain to form a joint anti-submarine system.

Dozens of J-16 and J-10C fighters, a long-range radar detection aircraft, an electronic warfare aircraft and a tanker aircraft participated in the maneuvers to practice air supremacy.

The situation around Taiwan escalated significantly following a visit to the island in early August last year by then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi’s visit, seeing it as an act of US support for Taiwan separatism, and conducted large-scale military exercises.
