US and Germany oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO

The US, Germany and Hungary have opposed giving Ukraine a roadmap to join NATO, the Financial Times reports.

“We have a few weeks of tough negotiations ahead of us to close these differences and formulate a political outcome,” one of the publication’s interlocutors said.

Ukraine’s closer integration with NATO is advocated by Poland and the Baltic states. According to the source, the provision of the roadmap is not supported by the USA, Germany and Hungary. Washington, in particular, worries that Ukraine’s rapprochement with the alliance during hostilities might lead to an escalation of the conflict – including a nuclear one – with Moscow.

It is noted that there is now a vigorous debate among NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on what exactly Ukraine should be offered in an updated declaration.
