Stoltenberg: NATO membership issue will not matter to Kiev without its victory

The issue of NATO membership will not matter for Ukraine if it does not win a military conflict, the alliance is providing unprecedented assistance to Kiev to prevent such a development. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this at a press conference in Brussels.

“The focus should now be on ensuring that Ukraine emerges victorious. Without this, the question of its membership will not matter. To this end, NATO has and will continue to provide significant support to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said when asked by Ukrainian journalists whether Kiev could expect to join NATO during the ongoing conflict.

At the same time, the alliance secretary-general stressed that NATO’s position “remains unchanged and Ukraine will become a member of NATO”.

The Russian side has repeatedly stated that Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance is unacceptable to Russia. Also, one of the reasons for launching a special military operation in Ukraine was that the alliance was getting closer to Russia’s borders, and one of the conditions for its termination was Kiev’s neutral status.
