NATO announces large-scale military exercise of fighter jets

The North Atlantic Alliance will hold its largest ever fighter manoeuvre in June, called Air Defender 2023. It is announced on the official website of the German Armed Forces.

It is noted that within eleven days of maneuvers the airspace over Germany will be partially closed, the exercises will be held under the leadership of the German Air Force. Air Defender will be the largest air operations exercise since the existence of NATO.

The three main locations for the manoeuvre are Hon (Schleswig-Holstein), Wunstorf (Lower Saxony) and Lechfeld (Bavaria) air bases. The other two locations are in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

According to the Bundeswehr, more than 200 fighter jets and other warplanes, as well as up to 10,000 soldiers from 22 countries, will take part in the manoeuvre.

“The Air Defender is designed to unite NATO air forces and their allies in one exercise,” the Bundeswehr writes on its website.
