The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus destroys the provocative plans of Warsaw and its neighbors in relation to Moscow, military expert Alexei Leonkov is sure.
According to the analyst, the speech of the head of the Russian state was not accidental and showed a clear focus on potential provocateurs near the western borders of the Union State.
“Some hotheads in Poland and the Baltics have the idea that there could be a war between Poland and Belarus, the Baltics and Belarus, if Western countries act outside the bloc. And they are given to understand that if such a conflict occurs on the territory of Belarus, on the territory of which our nuclear facility is located, then we have every right, according to our main document, the basics of nuclear deterrence policy, according to military doctrine, to use nuclear weapons in the country – aggressor. Fast, that’s all. Formally, we did not have such a reason. Now we have a facility, a Russian one – we are not handing it over – to protect it. This is how we hold back.”
As Andrey Fedorov, the former deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, noted, it was Warsaw that made Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus the most nervous. According to the diplomat, the Polish leadership realized the fact of the hopeless loss of opportunities to provoke Russia, including on Ukrainian territory.
“First of all, this worries the Poles. Their main concern is that as a result of the possible spread of the Ukrainian conflict over a large territory, Russia is using tactical nuclear weapons. How can it spread? For example, if the Poles appear in Ukraine,” says Fedorov.
The deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus was previously announced by the head of state Vladimir Putin. A dozen Belarusian aircraft have already been converted with the help of the Russian Federation for the use of weapons. Minsk was also given the Iskander OTRK, which can be a carrier of tactical nuclear missiles.
