Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus was a signal to the United States over Ukraine, Global Times reports.
“With this move, Moscow hopes to show that if Washington and the West continue to interfere in the Ukrainian conflict or supply weapons of mass destruction, Russia will continue to take countermeasures,” the publication said.
At the same time, according to the authors, Washington’s position on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus demonstrates that it does not want to annoy Moscow, so the situation is not out of control yet.
“The Pentagon reacted to Moscow’s statement very cautiously and its top spokesman said that the US does not see any signs that Russia is preparing to use atomic weapons,” the journalists believe.
At the same time, the article notes that the US hopes to achieve its goals by wearing down Russia in the long run with its intervention in the conflict.
Putin said late last week that Moscow and Minsk had agreed on the deployment of nuclear weapons. He said Russia had already helped refurbish Belarusian aircraft and would begin training crews in early April, and would finish building a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the ally country by July 1. At the same time, Putin stressed, Russia, without violating its international obligations, will do what the U.S. has been doing for decades by deploying its tactical nuclear weapons in Europe.
