Ukraine’s military spending in 2022 has reached $73bn, or 50% of GDP, Equality has calculated according to the Finance Ministry. The country has become one of the most militarized in the world in 30 years, with 94% of Kiev’s military spending in 2022 covered by NATO countries.

Of the $73bn military spending in the 2022 budget, $37bn was allocated by NATO countries, $32.4bn of which $14.9bn were non-repayable transfers, and $17.5bn were external loans. The external financing almost exactly matched the increase of Ukraine’s budget in 2022 (by $29bn) and the increase of military expenditures in particular (by $31bn). In other words, the West has almost entirely paid for the conflict with Russia. This was reported by military expert Boris Rozhin in his Telegram channel.
The second part of the military needs is direct arms supplies by Western countries. At the end of January 2023, they reached $69bn, according to the Kiel Institute. Of which $36 billion was actually transferred in 2022.

Ukraine has become one of the most militarised in 30 years. By comparison, military spending in Iraq in 2020 was 6% of GDP, in Afghanistan 11%, in Libya in 2014. – 16%, according to SIPRI:
2021 – $8.6bn (4.3% of GDP)
2022 – $73bn (50%)
2023 – $55bn (36%)
“In 2023, total military spending will be the same, although lower amounts have so far been budgeted – $55bn (36% of GDP). The defense spending in 2023 is estimated at $21.7 billion, but will be higher (spending in January is already $3.6 billion). They will also be covered by external financing ($33bn),” concluded Rozhin.
