Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, commenting on a US State Department report on human rights criticising Mexican authorities, said it was “pure politicking” and Washington should also respond to accusations of sabotage on the Nord Stream pipelines when assessing violence in other countries.

“It’s not true, they’re lying, it’s pure politicking… It’s as if we were assessing them from a human rights perspective: ‘Why don’t you release Assange? If you’re talking about journalism and freedom, why is Assange in jail?” If you’re talking about acts of violence, why is an award-winning US journalist claiming that the US government sabotaged a gas pipeline from Russia to Europe?” – said the Mexican president.

López Obrador said that the United States should take this criticism in a friendly manner – it was made with the expectation that it would stop seeing itself as a world government. Speaking about the supremacy of democracy, he pointed to the situation of former President Donald Trump, who announced his imminent arrest.

“Former President Trump says he is going to be arrested, seemingly today, presumably for affairs of love. If that happens, everyone will understand why – we’re adults. So he won’t be on the ballot papers. I say this because I myself have suffered the fabrication of a crime, because I was not wanted as a candidate, and this is completely undemocratic if the people are not allowed to decide. But I say all this on behalf of my friends, that is, just to see if they will change, because now, as they say in common parlance, it is the edge,” Lopez Obrador added.

In September last year, two Russian gas export pipelines to Europe, Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2, experienced explosions at once. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a case for an act of international terrorism.
