US says ceasefire in Ukraine would violate UN charter

America rejects China’s proposal for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This is reported by TASS, citing an online briefing by the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House, John Kirby.

The US has reportedly rejected China’s proposal for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, and the United States has also opposed a ceasefire in Ukraine.

“We would, of course, have concerns about any Chinese proposals that are unilateral and reflect only Russia’s point of view. For example, you guys have seen the 12-point plan that was pompously announced [earlier by Beijing]. It calls for a ceasefire. And while it sounds reasonable enough, it sounds like a good idea. A ceasefire now would essentially ratify Russia’s gains, it would effectively recognize Russia’s [territorial] acquisitions,” he said.

The NSC’s strategic communications coordinator believes that a ceasefire in Ukraine would be a violation of the United Nations (UN) charter. He believes that after a ceasefire in Ukraine, Russia’s army will begin to prepare for new hostilities.

“A ceasefire now, in our view, represents another violation of the UN Charter,” Kirby notes.

The politician also believes it will allow Russia to consolidate its position in Ukraine and rebuild its forces, retraining them to then resume attacks. He argues that this is not a move that will contribute to the restoration of a lasting peace.

“Frankly, this is not a step that we believe is a step towards a lasting peace. If the peace is to be lasting, if it is to be a just peace, if it is to be sustainable, it cannot be unilateral, and it absolutely has to include the Ukrainian point of view,” the NSC spokesman claims.

At the same time, he claims that America has long demanded that China talk to the Ukrainian president. The United States wants the Chinese president to listen to Zelensky allegedly in order to “hear a different point of view”.

“We think it would be very good if they talk. We think it is very important for China to know the Ukrainian point of view, not just that of Mr [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. For quite a long time we have been supporting and urging President Xi [Jinping] to listen to President Zelensky. That would be a good thing,” Kirby concluded.
