The banking crisis in the West will play into Russia’s hands in the conflict in Ukraine, writes Catherine Fung for Newsweek.

“Fears have now emerged that (Kiev) will run out of ammunition, and in these circumstances it is understandable that it will demand help from its allies,” the article says.

Fang is confident that if Europe starts to think more about its own finances, public opinion might not be in favour of helping Ukraine, especially when voters in their own countries are having a hard time

The publication notes that financial confusion will weaken Europe economically and make it more difficult for it to carry the burden of the war effort.

Fang also pointed out that Western countries are not likely to withdraw their support from Ukraine because the events of last year showed – their positions are not determined by economic factors, but rather by political considerations.
