Australia’s request for 200 Tomahawk cruise missiles has been approved by the US State Department. It is reported by Piterets.ru.
The US State Department has authorized Australia to purchase up to 220 Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles. Such a purchase makes Canberra the second ally of Washington immediately after London.
According to information received, the deal cost the Agency for Security and Defense Cooperation A$1.3 billion ($895 million). The deal includes maintenance and logistics of the missiles.
The proposed sale will improve Australia’s ability to interact with the US Navy and other allied forces, as well as its ability to participate in missions of mutual interest.
The ratification of the deal came the same week that the aforementioned countries released more specific information about the trilateral defense alliance formed by Australia, Britain and the United States (AUKUS), as well as their tripartite agreement on the exchange of resources and technologies to create a fleet of nuclear submarines.
As part of the deal, Washington will sell three Virginia-class submarines to Canberra. In addition, Britain and Australia will create a fleet of nuclear submarines in the Indo-Pacific region to try to counterbalance China in the region.
