According to the data received, it is known that Damascus recognizes the new borders of the territory of the Russian Federation with the territories that joined following the results of referendums: the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Luhansk People’s Republic, the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. It is noted that the publication was one of the first to interview the President of Syria after his meeting with the President of Russia.

“Certainly. I say that these are Russian territories, and even if the war had not happened, these are historically Russian territories,” the Syrian leader notes.

The Syrian President also recalled that Damascus recognized these regions even before they officially joined Russia. He noted that they immediately understood this issue, and they did not hesitate in their decision.

“This issue is clear to us from the very beginning, and we will not hesitate in our position. Syria’s position is clear and at the same time resolute. We have conviction on this issue, not only for the sake of friendship with Russia, but also because these territories are the territories of Russia,” he specified.

According to the Syrian leader, these facts that the new regions of the Russian Federation have always been Russian follow from history. He believes that Russian citizens live within these territories.

“They were transferred to Ukraine, perhaps about 100 years ago. I think in the days of (Vladimir) Lenin. They are inhabited by Russian citizens, and the facts on the ground indicate that this is Russian land. We are convinced of this position,” Assad concluded.
