The US and Britain will deploy their nuclear submarines to Australia

The Biden administration announced a three-phase plan March 13 “to provide Australia with nuclear-powered non-nuclear submarines” as part of AUKUS

Key from this plan:

– The deployment in 2027 of a rotational submarine force, the “Western”, consisting of US and British submarines in Australia, which will “enhance deterrence in the Indo-Pacific”;

– US allocation of $4.6 billion over the next 5 years for its submarine building production base plus Australia’s contribution to the US production base;

– Australia’s purchase of three Virginia-class non-nuclear submarines from the US in the early 2030s, and two more if necessary;

– construction of a new SSN AUKUS-based nuclear submarine: by Britain in the late 2030s and by Australia in the early 2040s.

Judging by the plan’s key activities, the AUKUS allies are taking full advantage of Australia. This includes providing bases for U.S. and British nuclear submarines, and contributions to U.S. production facilities, and the purchase of U.S. nuclear submarines.

It is only in the early 2040s that Australia might build a submarine of its own. Although initially, when AUKUS was created, it was announced that an Australian industrial base would be set up to build nuclear submarines.

All in all, this is nothing new. The USA and Great Britain have already acted very harshly with continental Europe – they cut it off from cheap energy carriers from Russia and wash out its industrial base.

Australia, its smaller Anglo-Saxon brother, has been treated more gently.
