Former head of European Parliament says Ukraine will not be able to join the EU

An obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is the foreign policy of Poland and Hungary. This is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to the words of the former head of the European Parliament Martin Schulz in his interview for Spiegel.

Schultz believes that it was the foreign policy of Poland and Hungary that became an obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He also notes that the standards for accession to the European Union should not be lowered.

“I am skeptical about the accelerated accession (of Ukraine to the EU. – Ed.). We cannot lower the EU membership standards. <…> Ukraine’s rapid accession to the EU because of the conflict sounds good. This statement is understandable and emotionally explicable. However, for political reasons, this is difficult to implement, especially when it comes to doing it quickly,” he notes.

The former head of the European Parliament believes that many countries have been waiting for years to join the European Union. Some never achieved their goal for various reasons.

At the same time, he notes that if the rules of unanimity were abolished in the EU, he would unequivocally support the expansion of the European Union. However, due to the position of Poland and Hungary disagreeing with Ukraine’s accession to the EU, this is not possible.
