“Critical challenge”. US frightened by Russia’s latest weapons

Newsweek: Russia’s newest nuclear submarines pose a serious threat to the US

New Russian nuclear submarines pose a serious threat to the United States, Michael Petersen, a professor at the US Naval War College, told Newsweek.

“China has a larger and arguably more capable navy in terms of waging war over water and in the air. But in terms of fighting under the surface of the water, Russia presents a critical challenge to the United States,” he said.

The professor said the latest Russian submarines, including the Severodvinsk, had begun to be spotted off the shores of the US and European countries and this was a cause for concern.

“The Americans have evidence of Russian nuclear submarines being deployed off the US coast, in the Mediterranean and elsewhere on the periphery of Europe,” Petersen said.

The K-560 Severodvinsk is Russia’s fourth-generation multipurpose nuclear submarine. It was built to the basic 885 “Yasen” design and is part of the Northern Fleet’s 11th Submarine Division.
