A think tank in Brussels claims that Europe’s purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia are breaking records. The European Union, which is the most zealous fighter against the purchase of Russian liquefied gas, is in second place in its acquisition. This is reported by Expert.ru with reference to the Analytical Center in Brussels.
Warm weather softened the energy blow to Europe, but against the backdrop of a reduction in pipeline gas supplies to the European Union, the supply of liquefied gas from Russia tripled.
“The European Union (EU) bought last year the highest amount of Russian LNG since 2019 – 19.2 billion m³, which is more than a third (35%) more than in 2021, when Europe bought 14.2 billion m³,” the Brueghel Institut, a think tank in Brussels, reports.
Brussels is afraid that it cannot refuse “blue fuel” from Russia. According to experts and head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol, the energy crisis has not ended, so the rejection of LNG can lead to disastrous consequences. The Europeans survived this winter not because there was enough gas in European tanks, but only because last winter was abnormally warm. Whether they will be able to survive the winter of 2023-2024 is unknown.
The fact is that one American LNG, which the Europeans basically replaced Russian gas with last year, is clearly not enough for this. Therefore, apparently, they decided in Brussels that it is too risky to refuse Russian LNG now.
