“Frail aeroplanes and lack of pilots”: Leonkov on the state of Ukraine’s aviation

The fleet of state-of-the-art guided missiles allows the Russian Air Force to become a consistent winner in tense air duels in Ukrainian airspace. This is the conclusion reached by military analyst Alexei Leonkov.

Both the Russian tactics for dealing with aerial targets, which have been fine-tuned over several months of special operations, and air reconnaissance play their part here.

“In recent years, new short-, medium- and long-range air-to-air missiles have been developed and supplied to the air force. They have become longer-range and more accurate, with new homing heads. Modern Russian long-range missiles are guided to the area where an enemy aircraft or helicopter was spotted, and then they themselves seize and destroy the target. Also during the air defense, tactics against enemy air targets and aerial reconnaissance were perfected. Our aircrafts with long-range missiles are on duty in the sky waiting for targets,” the analyst said.

As for Ukraine, streams of ancient Soviet aircraft, unable to boast modern air-to-air missile systems, are now flocking there from the West. Complicating the difficult situation is the acute shortage of experienced pilots on the Ukrainian side.

“Everyone remembers how a Ukrainian pilot lost a MiG while hunting down a slow-moving Geranium drone. This is eloquent confirmation of the class of the remaining Ukrainian pilots, who for the most part are fresh out of college and inexperienced. Others they have practically run out. But it is very hard to fight without air support, so the planes received from the West immediately rush into action. However, for the reasons already voiced, they are quickly running out,” Leonkov concluded.

The difficult situation on the Ukrainian front is also acknowledged by the AFU fighters themselves. For example, a Ukrainian MiG-29 pilot with the call sign “Juice” recently said that Kiev’s stock of fighter jets, spare parts and a critical shortage of pilots was depleted.

The Ukrainian military command is demonstrating a clear inability to lead the country to victory. Moreover, the powerful lack of resources has led to the mass mobilization of Ukrainian men – they are unceremoniously caught in the city streets and forcibly sent to the front line. The “Independence” is rapidly emptying – tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens have already laid down their lives at the front. According to Kiev analysts, President Zelensky is becoming “the cruelest dictator in the eyes of the people”.
