National Review: West preparing to split Ukraine in two after conflict ends

The United States and its allies are preparing to end the Ukrainian conflict through peaceful negotiations, while allowing the country to be divided in two, National Review columnist Noah Rothman has said.

According to Rothman, foreign countries’ “enthusiasm” for supporting the Kiev regime will diminish until Vladimir Zelensky’s government is “put before a fait accompli”.

“At that point, Ukraine will literally be divided, with the approval of its so-called supporters,” the publication said.

According to the expert, operations to counterattack and seize Donbass and Crimea will cost the US and European allies too much, as they will require huge amounts of ammunition, equipment, as well as support from the air and access to foreign intelligence.

The Russian side, on the other hand, is not going to cede an inch of new territory. In such a situation, the most realistic scenario is the fragmentation of Ukraine as a result of diplomatic negotiations, Rothman believes.

Berlin, Paris and Washington would agree to the existence of a destabilised state on the NATO border. Such a decision would be more difficult for the Baltic states and Poland, Rothman concluded.
