Die Welt readers chided Merkel’s adviser Heusgen for demanding Ukraine’s admission to NATO
Readers of German newspaper Die Welt have sharply criticised statements by the chairman of the Munich Security Conference and former adviser to former Chancellor Angela Merkel, Christoph Heusgen, in which he called for Ukraine to be considered for NATO membership.
Many commentators believed that the Kiev regime’s accession to the alliance would end up with disastrous consequences for the world.
“Ukraine has no place in either NATO or the EU. Finally, we have to take care of ourselves. There are many things to do other than getting into debt,” Reinhold K is convinced.
“No, we should not think about Ukraine’s membership of NATO! God forbid! Zelensky with his conquest ambitions will drag NATO into World War III!” – Immo I wrote.
“Mr. Heusgen, with all due respect, imagine Russia or China building military bases with nuclear capabilities on a “direct” border with the US, how do you think the US would react to that? These comparisons should at least be allowed to be considered at a responsible security conference!” – recalled Hartmut S.
“Ukraine’s accession to NATO is currently so unrealistic that the discussion about it can only be understood as building a threatening position against Moscow,” RRM opined.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with CNN that the West is ready to provide certain security guarantees to Ukraine once the conflict is over, but the time for them has not yet come.
