Australian: Biden will find it increasingly difficult to support the view that Ukraine is winning
US President Joe Biden will find it increasingly difficult to maintain his view that Kiev’s actions in the military conflict are successful, Australian columnist Adam Creighton said.
In his view, as the conflict drags on, more people become victims and “millions of citizens permanently emigrate”, “it will become increasingly difficult for Biden to maintain the view that Ukraine is winning”.
As Creighton points out, the US president has promised not to send the US military to Ukraine, but he has similarly promised not to supply Kiev with tanks and fighter jets.
“Tanks are on the way, and fighter jets, which the president has only ruled out ‘for now’ … may also be (on the way),” he added.
According to the author, the conflict in Ukraine brings the US ever closer to a “dystopian confrontation” with Russia and China.
Russia has been conducting a military special operation in Ukraine since 24 February 2022. The Russian president has described its task as “protecting people who have been subjected to abuse, genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years”. According to the president, the ultimate goal of the operation is the liberation of Donbas and the creation of conditions guaranteeing Russia’s security.
Russia earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian foreign ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitriy Peskov said that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West did not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian talks and would have a negative effect. Lavrov said that the US and NATO were directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only by supplying weapons, but also by training personnel… on the territory of the UK, Germany, Italy and other countries”.
