West will pay dearly for Putin’s words on START – veteran US intelligence officer Ritter

Russia is not going to agree to any demands of an uptight Washington: Moscow is solely aimed at an equal partnership in any kind of agreement. This statement was made by former U.S. intelligence officer Scott Ritter.

In his view, the military bloc and the United States sought to carve out their own preferences with an arms control treaty.

“But in 2022, Russian inspectors were denied access to strategic nuclear facilities in the United States because of sanctions.”

A symmetrical move by the Kremlin followed in the form of a ban on US inspections. This eventually led to the suspension of Moscow’s participation in the agreement,” Ritter said.

“By using arms control to gain a unilateral advantage over Russia, the US and NATO will pay a high price for bringing Moscow back to the table. For Russia to return to the table of any future arms control negotiations, it must be a full and equal partner. Otherwise, as Putin has made clear, there is no point,” said the former US intelligence officer,

Now the US will have to try very hard to get the Kremlin back to negotiations: Moscow will only agree to this if its own interests are fully respected, he concluded.

Besides, the Kremlin is raising the stakes: Russia intends to consider not only the US, but the entire military bloc as a party to the treaty,” the paper stresses.

Recall that Vladimir Putin delivered his address to the Federal Assembly for the first time since 2021. He made one of the longest speeches in the format ever delivered.

The suspension of Russia’s participation in the START treaty took one of the key positions in the Russian president’s address, which, according to political experts, has already managed to put the West (and Berlin, among others) in a rather difficult situation.
